Where Do Coyotes Live? Do More Coyotes Live in Urban Areas, or Wild Areas?

In many cities in the US, Coyotes have started to appear during the last decades. Urban residents are still getting used to the idea of living with the urban coyotes. The presence of Coyotes in the urban areas of the US has increased the awareness about the role of these creatures on the ecology in the urban areas. We need to understand that coyotes have fully adapted to the urban life and they will be here to stay.

Coyotes Are Creating Territories at Green Spaces
Many of the urban coyotes are dwelling the forest preserves of the urban areas; however, it will not always be the case. They do not require a vast green space when looking for a possible home. A small, green space that is hunt-able would be suitable for their territory.

The Coyotes would be able to survive in smaller territory if there is an adequate source of water and food. In the event that it does not have enough supply, they will choose to expand their territory that will include unconventional places in the urban areas. The hunting range of the Coyotes can expand up to 10 mile. Their territory will be significantly smaller compared to the coyotes found in the jungle due to the amount of food found in the area.

According to the experts, the coyotes are still choosing the wooded areas away from the residential area of the human. Nonetheless, when food is not available within their territory, they will still choose to invade our property.

The Dens of the Urban Coyotes Are Difficult to Find
Though public may be aware that there is a coyote that is dwelling at the urban park, the possibility to encounter them while strolling is highly unlikely. Coyotes are clever creature, and they are good in hiding their den. Most of the time they will have several dens, each den will have multiple entry and exit points to keep them safe from the dangers of the predators. Their dens can normally be found hidden in the shrubs or wooded areas of the preserves and parks.

Coyotes will still avoid the commercial and residential area whenever they can. They will choose a den that is away from the presence of any human activity. Once the den of the coyotes has been disturbed by the human, they will choose to move to a new location to keep their young ones safe. This means that even if you successfully find the den of the coyote, there is a possibility that the pack of coyote will not be there when you return.

Urban Coyote will not usually target our garbage and pets. Most of them prefer to stick with their usual diet. Their regular diet will primarily consist of small rodents, rabbit, deer, fruits, and vegetables. This is why they prefer to stay in park, cemetery and nature preserves where there is an abundant source of food items, fallen fruits, reptiles, and rodents.
