Diseases Carried by Coyotes and Signs of a Sick Coyote

A lot of people dislike coyotes due to their destructive nature or the fatal danger that they pose to pets and livestock. What many don’t know is that coyote is also prone to diseases that make them very dangerous to have around your home or even workplace. One of the most common of all the diseases is rabies which is spread through bites and even itching. This is why you need to keep your pets away from coyote since they may not be killed immediately but may get infected by diseases.



Common Diseases That Coyote Carry
These diseases can be very dangerous to both human beings and their pets, which is why you should not be comfortable with having coyotes around you. The following is a list of common diseases that coyotes carry.

Rabies
This is one of the deadliest animal diseases that spreads fast and can be fatal. It is spread through saliva in bites and even through scratching making it easily transmittable to you or your pets.

Heartworm
Coyote are known carriers of heartworm, and if they are living near your home, it is likely that your cats and dogs may get infected. It is a very dangerous disease that takes a while to be known, so it is better to prevent coyote from living close to you.

Hydatid Disease
This is a kind of tapeworm that can be passed to both human beings and animals. It is fatal to human beings, and the worst part is that it can take up to 10 years without knowing that one has been infected.

Scarcoptic Mange
The disease is transmitted through a mite that burrows deep into the skin causing loss of fur and over time and reduces the animal’s immunity which causes them to get infected easily. Coyotes are a host for these mites, and if they are around your home, they can infect your pets and livestock.

Signs of a Sick Coyote
It is easy to identify a sick coyote just like any other animal. Some of the common signs include loss of hair and looking extra scruffy, itches a lot, teary and reddened eyes. The coyote may also have a limp and infections on their skin.

A sick coyote may also be uncharacteristically aggressive toward you so you should be careful and scare them away before they get too close to you. Once you see such an animal, the best thing would be to get yourself and pets as far away from it as possible so as not to risk any infection.

You can also call animal control especially if you see a number of them since they may not be able to get close to you but could be a danger to your neighbors. In case you notice that you or your pets have been infected, seek medical attention as soon as possible so as to get the situation under control.

The diseases that coyotes carry are very dangerous to you and your pets so you should not entertain their presence near you. Remember the ways to keep them off your compound and implement them so as to prevent any illnesses.
