How to Keep Coyotes Away from Your Property

It is not uncommon to see a coyote roaming around in some towns and cities. These kinds of coyotes are normally not dangerous and may not attack you without a cause. However, they can be quite destructive and annoying to have in your home, yard or farm. They may kill and feed on smaller animals such as chicken, goats, and pets hence causing a huge loss to you. This is why you need to find out to repel them without endangering them which is in most of the times not necessary.

1. Fencing
This is a great way of keeping coyotes out but you need to be very careful about the kind of fencing you do to ensure that they do not just go over it. You may use wire net or electric fencing if you can afford it. In the case of the net fencing, ensure that it is at least six feet tall. This will prevent them from jumping over it and getting into your compound. Also make sure that the wire goes down at least eight inches deep to prevent them from digging their way in. you may also want to install some coyote rollers that will prevent them from getting a grip on the wire.

2. Remove Sources of Food
When you see a coyote around you, it is mostly looking for food and it will identify places that it normally gets food. So if this is within your compound or neighborhood, you can be sure you will have regular visitors. Take the initiative and remove all sources of food such as garbage cans, pets and livestock. Remember that coyotes do feed on fruits as well so it you have fruit trees in your home, you may want to ensure that there are no fruits on the ground or ensure that they can’t get to them.

3. Bright Lights and Motion Sensors
Due to their very sharp sense of sight and hearing, coyotes don’t like bright lights or loud noises. This is why you should consider getting bright security lights or even street lamps and place a few motion sensors in your neighborhood. You can also have scheduled sprinklers due to the element of surprise that will confuse them hence scaring them away.

4. Strong Odors
Coyotes also have a very good sense of smell so you can be sure that they are not fans of strong odors. Many people use wolf urine, but since this can be a bit tricky to find using ammonia is preferred. You can soak a few rags in ammonia and place them around your home to repel the animals. However, you need to ensure that the scent is strong enough hence the need to reapply after some time especially if it has rained.

If a coyote doesn’t have anything it’s getting from your home or neighborhood; it is unlikely that they’ll keep coming. So take care of all attractive things to them especially food and your coyote problem will cease to exist.
