Where Do Foxes Live? Do More Foxes Live in Wild Areas or Urban Areas?

Foxes are carnivorous mammals which belong to Canidae family. There are various fox species including red foxes, gray foxes and kit foxes. They are highly adaptive creatures and can be found on every continent apart from the Antarctica. This adaptation has enabled them to stay in various environments including bustling urban areas.

In addition, you can find them in rural and town settings. Countries where foxes are usually found include USA, Canada and South American countries like Columbia and Venezuela. In the United States of America, they are located in Texas, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia.

The Fox’s Home
The home of a fox is known as a den. A den is a burrow in the ground that fox digs by removing the dirt. It is usually a place of refuge and a sanctuary for the animals. Even when hunted down the creature may refuse to leave home and end up being injured. They usually use these dens for a variety of reasons including resting and taking care of their kits. However, not all foxes live on the ground others also stay in logs and rock piles.

Urban Areas
In urban settings, foxes make their dens under the sheds or decks and porches. It is usually an unexpected place for most homeowners. They prefer these sites because, under the decks and porches, comfort is available for the fox to settle and raise its kits. It also shelters them against other factors such as harsh climatic conditions, especially during winter. If you find one on your property, you may get rid of it or wait until the kits are grown enough to leave the den.

Rural Areas
In rural areas, they commonly live in abandoned burrows, logs, cervices under and between cliffs, hollows of trees, lower forest canopies and rock piles.

Where Are You Most Likely to Find Foxes?
Foxes are both mysterious and private creatures. Therefore it is challenging to say where they are highly predominant. As we know, the wild is its natural habitat. But they are most likely to stay in remote rural areas. Due to human encroachments, it is becoming quite difficult to see them in rural settings. The animals are no longer shy preferring to live close to human territories in urban areas. There is a growing concern that foxes will run down metropolitan areas in the years to come. In urban areas, food and shelter are easily accessible.

The mammals can be irritating at times, and therefore if you see them in the compound, you must get rid of them. There are many ways to deal with the issues. Killing them should not be the first solution that comes to mind since some are endangered. The most useful methods are trapping the animal, fencing your compound, and removing their source of food. Contact animal control experts if the task is too complicated for you.
