Types of Chipmunk Repellents and Do They Work

Chipmunks can be very destructive to your home and garden hence the need to repel them. However, many of the repellents that one may know of don’t work so well which is why you should take time to do a little research about them so as to find the perfect one. There are many of these solutions online, but if you want a completely chipmunk proof list of repellents, then this article should guide you as you’re shopping around.

Trapping
Trapping should get rid of the little critters if they are not yet present in large numbers. You can use steel traps with a bait station where you can place something like nuts or normal food. The idea is to capture them then release them to a place away from any homes.

Solar Owls
Chipmunks fear owls since they feed on them. This is why it is a good idea to buy one or two for your yard which should scare them away. There are different types in the market, but most of them light their eyes and rotate which makes them look alive. Some are run by electricity while others are run by batteries or wind that will move the wings.

Spray Repellents
There are different types of spray repellents that work by keeping the chipmunks away from the areas that you have sprayed. Most of these usually have an undesirable smell to the animals hence repelling them. Spray repellents do work for small infestations of the critters. However, it may get washed away by rain which may allow the chipmunks back into your compound. However, if you keep spraying especially in common places of entry, you should have a working solution for the most part.

Granular Repellents
These are solid sand or powder like repellents that basically allow you to create a barrier around your home. They work by emitting a smell that keeps the chipmunks away and actually last longer than the liquid repellent. It is safe to be applied indoors and outdoors depending on the kind of infestation that you have. Given that it does not easily dissolve, it is a good method that will give you longer relief from chipmunks and may actually keep them permanently away. However, you will still need to constantly pour some more every so often.

Electronic Repellents
These are usually placed around flower beds and gardens to scare off the chipmunks. They work by spraying bursts of water to the chipmunks hence scaring them away. They are a preferred way of repelling chipmunks since they do not harm the critters in any way and they learn to stay off the garden since they are taken by surprise by the sprays. However, they need to sense or see the chipmunks in order to work which may not always be the case hence they have a possibility of failing.

Ensure that you keep anything that may attract the chipmunks to your compound far away and that you always keep your windows and doors closed especially at night to keep them out. Choose your repellent carefully or combine a couple for the best results.
