How to Trap a Chipmunk

No doubt that chipmunk is cute and fuzzy. However, these small rodents can become a headache and quite difficult to manage. First, they can cause significant health hazards to the family. Chipmunks can even loosen foundations of structures when they burrow. If you have a beautiful yard, they may ruin it, causing you worry and stress.



If you have a chicken, they will eat the seeds meant for the bird, or even attack them. You may even find small hatchlings killed and eggs destroyed. Thus, dealing with the problem might be the best solution for you. What are options available?

Trapping a Chipmunk

Live Traps
There are various types of traps to deal with chipmunks. Instead of buying commercially available traps, you can use the bucket trap. It is a fun project mostly for your kids. Take a regular bucket, stick, rope or even fishing cord and bait. Setting up the trap is simple but make sure to identify an area where they frequent. It requires patience and a little bit getting used to.

When using live traps, you will get a wide range of selections such as the one door trap. However, make sure that when setting the trap in the house; close all the doors, holes and every crack. Chipmunks have an acute sense of smell thus avoid leaving event the faintest smell on the trap. The best place of placing the trap is near the chipmunk burrow. Note that it might be difficult because they tend to camouflage the entrance. Place the trap near the trail they use and use attractive bait.

Lethal Way
While trapping is an efficient way to deal with chipmunks, you can just kill them. You can do this if they have become a menace. Additionally, if you want a method, which is also fast. Of course, prepare to deal with the carcass and become brave. However, note that killing is not the most efficient way to handle the situation.

Snap Traps: It is a common method used by many generations to deal with small rodents like rats. You place bait such as seeds and wait for the rodent to set off the trap. Once the bait is moved, the snap releases and breaks the animal’s neck.

Electrocuted Traps
It is an inhumane way of killing the chipmunk. Similar to regular box traps, they trap the chipmunks, which are subsequently electrocuted.

Poison
Using poison also has some problems and may not offer the perfect way to handle the rodent infestation. Most poisons don’t work instantly and may take time before the rodents die. In addition, you must find them where they have wandered and die.
