About Chipmunk: Appearance, Biology, Life Cycle, Habitat, Diet, Behavior

Chipmunks are small sized squirrels, and they are typically found in the US. They are pretty cute in appearance, and so many people choose them as pets. Due to their adaptability, they can survive in various environments and under different weather conditions and circumstances.

Their size does not exceed 11 inches, while it usually stretches from 7 to 10. They have two long stripes on top of their body and all the way to the end of the tail. The stripes are white with darker borders than the rest of the fur, most usually black. The fur is brown or grayish or even red.

The claws of the chipmunks are small, but in combination with their back legs, they add to their climbing skills. They live up to three years, due to the harsh conditions out in the wild. Pet chipmunks, however, might outlive this time and even reach ten years of age or more.

There are Eastern and Western chipmunks. The former breed twice a year, whereas the latter just breed once. As far as their diet is concerned, they mostly eat nuts and seeds. They also eat fruit, as well as small insects and anything else they can get their hands on.

Of course, you must have heard about their habit of hoarding trees. This means that they plan ahead and store their food for the winter. As a result, they can adapt even to the most demanding environment. They can last without food since they have packed enough for the hardships to come.

Apart from that, their habit of hoarding the trees is very important ecologically. Due to the fact that they also feed on fungi, they store them inside the trees and spread their spores. These are crucial for maintaining the ecological balance of the habitat they live in.

As for their habitat, they choose to stay in forests and woodlands. They love wood, and they use it to stash food, find shelter and protect themselves against the weather conditions or other mammals. So their ideal habitat is associated with wood. That being said, they can also survive in other environments. In fact, they can even survive in the city.

Bottom Line
Even though the chipmunks have been world renowned as a cartoon, they are much more than those cute and bouncy little creatures. They are great climbers and talented hoarders, contributing to the ecosystem, in which they live. Chipmunks are very beautiful creatures, small in size and with distinctive stripes on top of their body.

They are amazing, and they can adapt easily to different environments. If you ever find a chipmunk, you will be amazed not only at its looks. You will also be stunned by its graceful movements and its unique patterns. As a whole, chipmunks are among the funniest and most useful creatures on Earth!
