Do dogs keep rats and mice away?

If you have a rodent problem, you might want to consider an all-natural option. You could get an animal that is a natural enemy of rodents. When you think about animals that are designed to keep away rodents like mice and rats, your first thought is a cat -right? We have all seen the old cartoons with the cat and mouse that are always trying to outwit each other! Well it might surprise you to know that dogs can be very effective for natural pest control against many pests including rats and mice. Do not get me wrong, Cats can be great controlling rodents, but they are opportunistic by nature and often take up a lackadaisical attitude toward the rats and mice, especially as they get older.

Dogs, unbelievably, can be as fierce as any cat when it comes to rodents. Dogs are territorial, always want to please you, and can be trained to be always on the lookout. They will work nonstop to keep rodent activity under control as a matter of their duty, and to please you. For centuries dogs have been the go to animal for rodent control from the time of the bubonic plague in medieval times, on farms that depend on crops for their livelihood, and on large estates that kept game birds and stables. Some of the dogs bred specifically as “ratters” are Terriers (including the Rat, Cairn, Lakeland, and Jack Russell varieties), Dachshunds (weenie dogs), Papillion, Miniature Schnauzer, and the German Pinscher.

The above-listed dog breeds are not the only dogs that can become excellent at keeping your property free of vermin, just the ones that were once bred for that purpose. If you decide to get a dog to aid in vermin control, chances are you will also have a loving and loyal companion for life. , Please remember that man’s best friend will give their all to make you, their master, proud of them by doing what pleases you including eliminating any unwanted pests. All they ask in return is to be fed, cared for, and loved. Make sure that you have the time to devote to your new family member before you decide to take on a dog (or any animal) for the purpose of pest control.
