Waco wildlife control tip of the month: Gopher Removal - Gophers are burrowing rodents that can be found everywhere. One of the major problems they cause is destroying land and plants. For this reason many people wonder how to Keep away gophers. However, there are several gopher removal systems that you can use in order to prevent the damage caused by these rodents. Gophers have sharp claws and teeth that they use to burrow and eat plant matter. They usually live in holes underground, which consist of complex tunnels systems that can run a hundred feet below the ground. They also create chambers off the main tunnel, which they use for storing food and for breeding purposes. You will only find one gopher in one tunnel because they delight in living on their own. Note that gophers are active throughout the year. You can easily identify them by their short tails, tiny ears, long and hard front teeth and small eyes. If you happen to identify them in your land, it is always good to use gopher removal methods to keep yourself from being a victim of the problems they cause because they multiply quickly. Their breeding season is during the spring season and they have an estimated gestation period of three weeks. They give birth to litter that has average of five young ones and in some seasons they can give birth to two young ones. In the same year during the late summer, the young ones disperse to create homes of their own thereby increasing the rate of destruction. That is why it is always advisable to get rid of the gophers you identify before they increase.

Problems they cause - Gophers only feed on roots, shrubs, trees, plants and grass. In spite of playing an important role in the ecosystem by increasing soil fertility, gophers are very destructive. The problems they cause include destroying gardens, ruining lawns and killing trees. It is therefore very frustrating to have a bunch of these rodents in your yard. The earlier you use gopher removal systems, the better. Note that troublesome gophers can chew your shrubs roots, havoc your lawns and move to an extent of damaging PVC pipes or buried utility cables.

How to Keep away gophers - Having known that gophers create more destruction as compared to the benefits, it is wise to use various gopher removal measures in order to eradicate them from our surroundings completely. There are quite a number of prevention measures that you can take against these rodents. You can use underground screen fencing or netting to protect gophers from accessing your garden. Another gopher removal measure is building your garden in a raised plant box thereby preventing gophers from digging into your garden. You can also plant annual grains such as buffer stripes to protect other crops that gophers feed on. Note that gophers will not thrive on plants like buffers and other plants of this kind simply because they do not provide enough food for them. Another gopher removal measure is to make a barrier of coarse gravel of at least six inches.

Trapping tips and other removal methods - The commonest gopher removal methods include using baits, electronics, traps, lawn sprays and gas bombs. Gopher removal using traps. There are a number of traps that can be used to catch gophers. Examples include choker-type box trap and pincher trap. You can use any trap you choose and the most important thing is to place it at the main entrance of the gopher' burrows and then enlarge the tunnel so that it will be possible to set the traps. In order for this gopher removal method to be very successful, it is advisable to set two traps that face in opposite directions. They will enable you to trap a gopher coming from either end of the tunnel. You do not necessarily have to bait the traps although baiting them can give better results. You could place lettuce, carrots or apples in the trap. You can then check the trap within two to three days and you can set the trap in another place if you find that no gopher has been caught within three days.

Gopher removal using poison baits - You could use botanical poison such as strychnine laced grain, which is extremely effective and works fast. You just need to apply it into the main tunnel. This is an effective gopher removal method because it kills the gophers that feed on it. Note that it will not be effective for new gophers that enter the tunnel since it decomposes a few days after being in the soil. You can also use diphacinone poison, which is usually combined with grain and embedded with wax forming a solid block. It acts slowly since a gopher has to feed on it for five to ten days before you notice any results.

Other gopher removal methods - include flooding the gophers' hole and relying on natural predators. When you choose to use flooding as a gopher removal method, you just need to open the mould and then dig until you reach the main tunnel. Afterwards, place the hose in the tunnel and turn the water on. You should then allow the water to run inside the tunnel for at least fifteen minutes to an hour. When this is happening, look for different moulds where the rodent can escape from. When you see gophers trying to escape, you can use either a shovel or any other tool to kill them. Relying on natural predators is another gopher removal method but it is not very effective because predators do not stake out a short feeding area. Therefore, they will not completely get rid of the gophers. You can use any of the gopher removal methods mentioned above to get rid of these rodents and then ensure that you monitor your garden regularly since other gophers can invade the old tunnels.
